History

Born to a well-to-do aristocratic family.  Parents both Sith, neither one really big on parental love and basically treated him like a tool; not cruel but no love at all in his family.  Was sent to Koriban to be trained and came under the instruction of a powerful Darth (not Baras, in our canon) and got caught up in this master’s plans to take over the Dark Council.  He was also Jahnn’s nemesis for a while, when they ran into each other on Tatooine, and he earned the Jedi’s respect.  When Jahnn and Draaks discovered the Vergents’ homeworld, Doriyen was one of the only two people they summoned there to share the knowledge they’d discovered.  At first distrustful, Doriyen learned the Vergent Order’s lessons very quickly and became much stronger for it, which allowed him to ultimately kill his Sith master when this Darth tried to end him in front of the entire Dark Council.  Not really loyal to the Sith or the Empire, Doriyen’s now content to serve himself and those few he considers trustworthy, following Jahnn’s crusade to restore and master the Vergent Order’s teachings.  By the time of the Fallen Empire, Doriyen has returned and pledged himself to fight for Jahnn and Saya’ka’s rebellion and then their Eternal Alliance, taking the role of a master general and assassin, still doing the dirty jobs that can’t be trusted to anyone else.

Character

Doriyen is all about quiet, brooding anger.  He doesn’t talk a lot and he doesn’t crack jokes like a lot of my characters do.  There’s a lot of anger about his past and his family and his life brewing just beneath the surface, and when he lets that rage loose he’s unstoppable.  Rather than be a slave to his anger like most Sith, though, he sees it as an enemy he is constantly fighting with for control.  He’s a very intense personality, and once he has an objective, he will single-mindedly fulfill it.  Before training as a Vergent, Doriyen was spiteful, especially towards his family, but also honorable and pragmatic as a Sith.  He didn’t kill others just to prove he could and would look for a peaceful solution if he felt it was the wiser course of action, but was also willing to slaughter dozens if they were between him and his goal.  Since retraining as a Vergent and discovering there are other sources of power besides passion, in his own quiet way he’s embraced the chance to stop being a thug and start being a real force for change.

There’s a lot about Doriyen I haven’t fleshed out, despite him being the 4th character I ever created for SWTOR.  I based a lot of his personality on the old 1980s Wolverine, who was a lot different than he is these days.  He’s grumpy and cranky and unfriendly, and doesn’t really know how to be any other way.  Doriyen has done terrible things in his life, and he’s willing to do them so that others don’t have to.  He’s a lot like Cassian from Rogue One that way: a basically good guy who was put in a position to do very bad things, and has to live with it.

He often wears a rebreather mask, but mainly for the intimidation factor.

Vergant ArmorCombat

Doriyen is a classically-trained Sith warrior who favors physical combat to using the Force as a weapon.  He uses two lightsabers, Yellow and Orange, which he crafted himself using Vergent parts and technology.  In a fight he’s better than any of the other Vergents, even Jahnn.  He’s embraced the new fighting styles and skills of the Vergents, which were specifically created to defeat both Jedi and Sith, and this has made him even more dangerous in a fight.  He’s ferocious in combat, dominating and defeating his foes remorselessly.

Special Skills

Poetry.  No, really.  He’s only ever let his Twi’lek companion read it, but she was earnestly touched by what she read.  Doriyen’s deeply in touch with his feelings, it’s why he was such an effective Sith and such a powerful Vergent.  So along with being the new fledgeling Vergent Order’s hit man, he’s also the author who takes their knowledge and discoveries, and actually pens it down for posterity.

Allies

Jahnn – A Jedi rival earlier in his life and a trusted friend and teacher in the Vergent Order they’re trying to rebuild.  Doriyen holds a strong unspoken respect for Jahnn, who has managed to maintain his cheer despite the crushing things they’ve all been through by the time of the Eternal Empire story.  It was Jahnn’s discovery of the Vergent Order philosophy that freed Doriyen from the weight of the Sith code, and Doriyen feels a debt to his friend for it.
